How to shave your armpits

How to get clean shaven armpits and prevent irritation
24 May 2009

Armpits are perhaps the trickiest area to shave. They’re in an inconvenient location and it is difficult to see if you’ve left stray hairs behind. Many women (and men) choose laser hair removal, but with the cost and follow-up treatments, there must be a better way. Others choose waxing, but lets be honest, that’s no walk in the park as far as pain goes.

Here we’ll offer some expert tips on how to shave armpits! It’s easy if you have the right tools and steps.

  1. The armpit is especially susceptible to infection, as there are many pores and sweat glands that work overtime there. Be sure you have a fresh razor ready for use, this helps prevent ingrown hairs and irritation. A blade surrounded by a conditioning strip is optimal because it creates a smoother drag across the sensitive skin on your underarms.

  2. Perhaps the most important step when learning how to shave armpits is to do it at the end of a warm shower. The warm water helps soften the cuticle of the hair and loosen the skin’s grip on the follicle, making it easier to remove.

  3. Use plenty of shaving cream! Nobody wants that irritated itchy feeling after shaving, and you won’t have to worry about it if you use a proper shave cream.

  4. Start by shaving with the hair growth, this cuts down some of the length and prevents pull from the blade on your skin. Go back over the same area, but now go against the grain of growth.

  5. When you think you’ve finished, run your fingertips across your underarms to feel for stubble. Chances are you’ve missed some stray hairs a little farther up your arm. Retrace the steps for a smooth shave. It may take several different stroke directions to get the cleanest shave, do what feels most comfortable for you.

  6. Finish by rinsing off with warm water and using a clean towel to pat dry. Do not immediately apply antiperspirant or deodorant as this will only cause irritation. Instead, apply a lotion or light oil to rehydrate the skin and prevent irritation.

Congratulations, you just learned how to shave armpits! No fear of razors here!
